Leather Garment Fit & Sizing Guide: How Leather Should Fit
One of the most common questions we receive is: "How should leather clothing fit?"
Leather can fit differently from woven fabrics. It has limited natural give, but it can gradually relax and mould to the contours of your body through regular wear. This makes choosing the correct size especially important.
Whether you are buying a leather jacket, breeches, trousers, vest, waistcoat, or corset, the right fit should feel comfortable when new while allowing enough room for normal movement.
The Golden Rule: Snug, Not Restrictive
A new leather garment should generally feel snug and secure, rather than excessively loose or painfully tight.
Depending on the design, you should be able to fasten the garment properly without excessive force. You should also be able to breathe, sit, walk, and move your arms normally.
Leather may relax and conform to your body with wear, but it should not be expected to correct a fundamentally incorrect size.
For example, a jacket that is slightly snug through the body may become more comfortable as it breaks in. However, if the shoulders are significantly too narrow or the garment restricts movement, wearing it repeatedly will not reliably solve the problem.
The goal is a close, comfortable fit — not maximum tightness.
How to Measure Yourself Correctly
Accurate measurements are more useful than relying only on your usual clothing size. Sizes can vary considerably between brands and garment designs.
Use a soft measuring tape and, where possible, have another person take the measurements for greater accuracy.
Measure while standing naturally and keep the tape measure snug but not tight.
Chest or Bust
Measure around the fullest part of your chest or bust. Keep the measuring tape horizontal and avoid pulling it tightly against your body.
Natural Waist
Measure around your natural waist — generally the narrowest part of your torso.
Do not automatically use your jeans or trouser size as your waist measurement. Your actual body measurement is more useful when ordering fitted leather garments.
Hips
Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, keeping the tape level.
This measurement is particularly important for fitted leather trousers, breeches, skirts, and other close fitting garments.
Inseam
For trousers and breeches, measure from the crotch area down the inside of the leg to the point where you want the garment to finish.
Shoulder Width
Measure across the back from one shoulder point to the other.
Shoulder measurements are especially important for leather jackets, coats, shirts, and structured vests because shoulder fit can be difficult to correct after the garment has been made.
How Different Leather Garments Should Fit
Different garments have different fitting requirements. A good fit for a leather jacket is not necessarily the same as a good fit for leather breeches or a corset.
Leather Jackets & Coats
A leather jacket should sit correctly across the shoulders and allow comfortable movement through the arms.
Ideally, choose enough room for the layer or layers you normally intend to wear underneath.
The shoulders deserve particular attention. If they are significantly too narrow, sizing up may be necessary. If they are too wide, the jacket can look oversized and the shoulder line may sit incorrectly.
Leather Breeches & Trousers
Leather breeches and trousers should feel firm and secure around the waist and seat without causing discomfort.
Because leather can relax somewhat through regular wear, a properly fitted garment may feel slightly firmer when new and become more comfortable as it breaks in.
However, don't intentionally order a dramatically smaller size expecting the leather to stretch into the correct fit.
For fitted leather trousers, your actual waist, hip, thigh, and inseam measurements can be more useful than your standard trouser size.
Leather Vests & Waistcoats
Leather vests and waistcoats are generally designed to sit closer to the body than many casual fabric garments.
Make sure the garment closes comfortably and does not pull excessively across the chest or back.
If you plan to wear a substantial layer underneath, allow additional room when selecting your size.
Leather Corsets
Corsets require particularly careful sizing because they are designed to fit closely around the torso.
A corset should provide a secure, supportive fit without causing difficulty breathing, excessive discomfort, numbness, or restricted circulation.
Do not assume that a greater waist reduction automatically means a better fit. If you are new to corsets, a conservative fit is generally preferable to trying to achieve maximum reduction immediately.

Should You Size Up or Down?
There is no universal rule that says you should always size up or down when buying leather clothing.
The correct choice depends on:

Never choose a leather garment simply because the label matches your usual clothing size.
Instead, compare your actual measurements with the measurements provided for the particular garment.
Allowing for the Break In Period
New leather can initially feel firmer than it will after several wears.
As you use the garment, normal movement can cause the leather to gradually relax and conform to your body.
This is particularly noticeable around areas that move frequently, such as:

However, the break in process should not be treated as a way to make an incorrectly sized garment fit.
Snug can become comfortable. Painfully tight is a sizing problem.
